Murmurations (Regata) is expressed through a large sailboat – a mighty object that humans control and use for travel and discovery, yet puts them at the mercy of the powerful and mysterious sea.

The exhibition culminates in the final room, which unveils the artist’s latest Murmurations series. Using the dress, a culturally loaded motif, Murphy starts a narrative that touches upon grand themes of nature, technology, and humanity over the past two hundred years. The skirts are clear and shaped like bell jars that encase free standing sculptures. When I say there is nothing new I mean we have been struggling with the nature of God for as long as we've been able to conceive that idea. We've been trying to come to terms with the division of the soul and this apparatus, the body.

The aesthetics of New York play into my art to some extent. It's so rich with history and with layers that you can literally see different eras happening concurrently - stories accumulate as materials, which, when you think about it, is another way to phrase "art."

What artists helped you form your philosophy? Arte Povera, and their use of basic, non-art materials. And Dada. The use of everyday objects being re-contextualized as sculpture. And then the old master paintings that dealt with line, edge and light.

Joseph Perrin was Professor Emeritus, and the founder and former Chairman of the School of Art and Design at Georgia State University.
A structural element that is virtually always included in Murphy's paintings is "writing," which he uses to symbolize his thoughts about the human condition and art.
